Remove an Ex from the Loan

Ending a relationship rarely happens on the same schedule as ending a home loan — but a joint loan usually needs to end. A refinance can transfer the loan into a single name (or new joint names), release the departing partner, and typically involves a corresponding title transfer.

Things to consider

  • The remaining borrower must qualify for the loan on their own income and expenses — serviceability is the bottleneck.
  • State-based stamp duty exemptions may apply to a transfer between separating spouses — get conveyancing advice.
  • This is emotionally and legally sensitive — consider family-law advice on property settlement before the refinance is finalised.
  • Consent orders or a binding financial agreement can be prerequisites for some lenders.

Explore whether using your home loan for this purpose may be appropriate — a Mortgage Freedom Review can help you understand the potential effect on repayments, total interest and your estimated mortgage-free date before you decide.

Results are estimates based on the information provided and stated assumptions. Savings, rates, approval and earlier repayment are not guaranteed. Credit approval, valuation, lender criteria, fees and product terms apply. Refinancing may not be suitable for everyone.

Submitting an initial enquiry for a Mortgage Freedom Review does not itself lodge a loan application. If a credit report or formal application may be required later, the responsible mortgage broker will explain the proposed step and obtain the necessary authority or consent.
